Condition and Measurements
This Mariner Yachts 36 (NH build) is a staysail ketch rig (aka cutter ketch). A marine survey report was completed in October 2019 and sea trial and closing on the sale completed in November 2019.
The notes below are based on observations and measurements made during the purchase process and in late November after the purchase.
Notes on General Condition
All exterior brightwork was varished and nearly all of the varinsh has peeled. There is no cracking. The topside rubstrake on either side have separated scarf joints. The rubstrake will need to be removed, reglued and remounted. Hopefully screws are exposed when strake rails are removed. Excluding these two scarf joints the exterior teak in good shape, but desperately needs sanding and teak oil.
The interior joinery is very good quality and having little sun exposure is in very good shape. The cabin sole will need sanding. The shower grating was varnished and will may need scraping before sanding. The remainder of the cabin mostly needs fine sanding, if any, and needs teak oil.
Topsides are in very good condition. Topsides are original gelcoat with lots of wax so very shiny. There was a very slight wave on port side hull due to oilcanning at the bulkheads when on the hard prior to purchase.
Bottom paint shows signs of painting over coats that had peeled. The bottom paint is otherwise in very good shape. The bottom should be soda blasted, the keel faired (preferably with epoxy and filler), a barrier coat layer added (including the keel to encapsulate the lead somewhat), and the bottom needs to be repainted.
The chartplotter is inexpensive and its display is fogged from moisture. Openning the case, heating lightly with a hair dryer (or very carefully with a heat gun), and resealing the case should solve the moisture problem. The radar is ancient. Speed and depth are ancient but functional. Wind looks more recent but still somewhat old. Most or all electrics such charging, inverter, battery isolater, are fairly new. Some electronics are aging. The battery is too small and has very little of its original capacity left. The refrigeration needs to be charged twice daily which indicates that the cold plate is undersized for the ice box size. The ice box is enormous but well insulated.
There are two reefs in main sail and none in mizzen sail. The mizzen boom supports two reefs. The staysail is club footed but parts related to the inner stay are missing. Reefing is single line and led aft to the end of the boom with internal lines led to cam cleats near gooseneck.
The solar panel is said to be about 100 watts but the prior owner was not sure and it is not marked on the panel. The flexible panel is mounted over the dodger and connected directly to solar charge controller via a connector mounted on the cabin top.
There might be room for a grey water tank. The ice box pumps to its own thru hull. The vanity sink and galley sink drain drain to their own through hull, each gravity fed. The shower sump pumps to the vanity sink thru hull. These can be pumped to a grey water tank or lacking room for a tank can be pumped to a single thru hull. The shower sump is a small forward bilge area and should be an actual sump. There are two Y-valves on the holding tank, one for head to tank or overboard, and the other for tank to pumpout or overboard. Some above waterline thru hulls lack a seacock.
The radar dome is mounted on the mizzen mast a bit higher than half way. The mount for radar was broken by the previous owner during sea trial. The depth transducer is glassed in. The speed transducer was not put in place due to misplacing the o-rings. Some o-rings were found in the chart table and these appear to be the right size but have not been fitted.

Some of the rigging for the staysail was missing.
Photos of Hull, Deck, and Cabin
Photos were taken of the hull topsides and bottom, cockpit and cabintop, and cabin and systems prior to purchase. These were not photos to show off the boat but rather reminders of what systems were aboard and relative sizes of equipment and storage areas.
Planned Work
Upgrades are planned for many of the systems aboard. Another web page describes major planned upgrades in detail. Sidedeck repair and related work, plumbing, electrical, and other work including steering pedestal changes, rebedding, refinishing, and joinery, and rigging improvements planned for fall 2019 and spring 2020 are described in other web pages. This work has extended into summer 2020 and is still in progress.
